Battle of Lake Borgne - first engagement of the Battle of New Orleans

December 14, 1814

Lake Borgne – With no wind, the British relentlessly close on the stranded American vessels and the Battle of Lake Borgne results in the British capturing five gunboats that would prove useful to the Royal Navy in the shallow sea lake. British casualties amount to seventeen killed, seventy-seven wounded and forty missing. US casualties include ten killed, with thirty-five wounded and eighty-six captured, including Lt. Thomas ap Catesby Jones. A fellow Welshman aboard a British boat offers to take a note to Gen. Jackson from Jones. Harold Lowe whispers to Jones that he is a double-agent.

Gentilly – Gen. Jackson is resting at the main redoubt in Gentilly when a horseman arrives. Harold Lowe brings the note: “Sir – Casualties high. All ships disabled and captured by the enemy. Regretfully, Lt. Jones.” The Americans are now blind to the actions of the Royal Navy who now commands all waters in the area. A wagon arrives with wounded US seamen, including journalist Matthew.
