Eve of Destruction

January 7, 1815, eve of the climactic engagement

de la Ronde Plantation – Tension is heavy. The climax is near. Gen. Pakenham goes over his final plan of attack, an all out attack on the Americans on both sides of the Mississippi. Troops will rush ahead with bundles of sugar cane to fill the Rodriguez Canal and ladders to scale the breastwork as two columns (8,000 seasoned troops), hidden by early morning fog, will start much closer to the American line than previous attempts.

Rodriguez Canal – Gen. Jackson’s command tenses for the attack, men kiss sweethearts goodbye, riflemen, soldiers, marines, seamen, native troops, volunteers try to rest behind their breastwork and wait. No doubt the end is coming and it will be a bloody affair.
