US Army artillery piece at battlefield
November 2, 1814, All Souls Day
New Orleans – The people of this predominately Creole city are
alerted to the coming invasion. Creoles in the Early 19th Century were
New World descendants of original French and Spanish settlers. In New Orleans,
it meant Europeans born in the city and plantations near the city. As many
gather in churches to pray for the souls of the departed not yet in heaven, the
ones not cleansed of their sins and still suffering in purgatory who could only
be helped by prayers from the living, a local paper proclaims British at the Ramparts! The British admiralty
is so confident of the impending military success, the London Times announced Gen. Pakenham will
command the expedition.
