US Artillery at the battle line
November 4, 1814
Atlantic Ocean – Sir Edward Pakenham meets with his staff to
plan the attack on New Orleans. It is obvious the invasion will be difficult.
The Americans have forts blocking an attack up the Mississippi River and
approaching the city through the swamps on the west bank of the river would
only leave the army across the river. An attack is feasible via the sea lakes east
and south of the city but it would be a dangerous task. The sea lakes are too
shallow for ships and the narrow passes between Lake Borgne and Lake
Pontchartrain are guarded by forts. It is agreed the best approach is via
Pensacola in Spanish Florida, skirting Mobile Bay (controlled by the Americans)
and approaching New Orleans from the northwest.
